Create a Paperless Business Cards

1. SMS – While it’s true that almost everyone you meet is going to have a pocket to store your business card in, it’s also true that almost everyone you meet will have a cell phone as well — and they’re likely to be a lot less cavalier about losing, misplacing, or throwing away their phone than they are about your business card. The services below allow you to beam your business card via SMS text message to interested parties.

Contxts – Send and receive 140 character business cards via text message for free. 140 characters doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s enough to include vital contact information (like name, business name, phone #, and email). See our previous review of Contxts here.

TextID – Meet someone new and tell them to text message your username to a short, six digit number. In return, they’ll receive your contact info via SMS. The service costs $19.95/month with 250 free texts.

DUB – Once you’ve created your business card on DUB’s web site you can then have it sent to other users by email or SMS simply by sending a text message to the DUB site. DUB actually could have fit into almost any of the categories in this section since it supports email, SMS, and they have iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile applications, as well as a web interface.

2. Mobile Web – MyNameIsE is essentially a mobile social network of business cards. The site collects together all of your social profiles into a virtual business card that is accessible via mobile web and iPhone-optimized web sites. When you meet a new contact, simply enter each other’s usernames and a connection is made.

Perhaps more interestingly, though, the people behind “E” have created a USB dongle called the E Connector (pictured above) that they plan to sell to trade show and conference organizers as a way for attendees to more easily share information. The dongle, which is about the size of the keyless entry keychain fobs used for automobiles, can automatically share contact information when it comes near another Connector. Read more…

Freelancers Starting Their Own Business

Category: Inspiration    |    127 views    |    Add a Comment  |

1) Move Out of Your Back Bedroom
If you are moving from freelancing to running a company then you need to show your potential customers that you are 100 per cent committed to the business, thus allaying their fears that you won’t be around in a few months time. If you can, move from your home workspace to a dedicated office. This doesn’t necessarily mean huge expense but it can instill a great deal of confidence in you from potential clients. Depending on where you are, office space can cost from as little as £130/month ($190) and should also help with your work-life balance. An additional benefit is that it will give you a postal address that you can publish on your stationery and website without revealing your home location.

2) Dress for Business
Now that you’re running a business (for better or worse) you will need to take a look at your appearance. Many may disagree, but personally I think nothing says business more than smart dress. Of course, it’s up to you how you dress but think about it this way. If you want the conversation to centre around your professional skills, don’t wear anything that will steal the conversation away from this. A T-shirt with a witty slogan on it may be just the thing for a night out with your mates, but a lunch with a potential client? Maybe not. Why do anything to stack the odds against your company winning the project?

I am happy to accept that this is a controversial subject and would be very interested to hear your thoughts about this. What works for you? Do customers react to you differently when you are wearing smart dress as opposed to casual? Read more…

10 Top Social Networks List

Category: Design Showcase, Inspiration, resources    |    229 views    |    Add a Comment  |

Here is the list of most beautiful Social Networks. if you want to add some more write a comment.

Flickr - yes, we like the Flickr look. It probably has to do with the fact that the site is full of beautiful photos, but Flickr’s easy-on-the-eyes aesthetics are carefully thought out and make the site really enjoyable to use.

Humble Voice - we’ve saved the best for last. HumbleVoice is yet another community for designers, artists and musicians, and it looks gorgeous. Page real estate is used generously, with most images on the site being really large, and all of the content is wrapped up in neat little boxes. As sometimes happens with art-related sites, some of the fonts are too tiny to read if you don’t have 20/20 vision, but we’re ready to forgive Humble Space this small blunder. After all, it’s artists we’re talking about here. Read more…
